Deepika invited by PM

When she watched tennis ace Saina Nehwal being awarded the sportswoman of the year title conferred on her by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, Deepika Padukone had a secret wish. “I thought to myself ‘Oh I wish I could meet the PM’,” she says .

And, someone up there was listening to this Bangalore beauty. By an uncanny coincidence, the very next day, Deepika received an invite from the PMO (Prime Minister’s Office) asking her to join the Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi, the PM, the visiting Japanese delegation and a few other dignitaries for dinner in New Delhi. “I was both excited and nervous. I’m also so honoured. Meeting Mrs Gandhi and Mrs Singh, the Prime Minister’s wife, was truly gratifying. Both of them knew who I was, and were also aware of my films like Om Shanti Om and Love Aaj Kal.
They wished me for my forthcoming release Karthik Calling Karthik.” Deepika says it wouldn’t be correct on her path to say any more about this high-profile meet simply because it would be breaking protocol. However, she feels she must have done something right to have bagged this honour. “Believe me, meeting Dr Manmohan Singh is something I will cherish forever. I truly admire him and Mrs Gandhi. They are visionaries.”
